Through The Looking Glass

The final project for the first year studio design sequence focuses on the making of an architectural intervention in a dense urban environment. The project address issues about architecture in the city - specifically the notion of public space within the public or private urban building - in the process heightening awareness of the nuanced terms public and private. The program vehicle is a small urban library that is dedicated to a special collection of books or artifacts, such that an honorific public space, one that is understood as an extension of or part of the city, exists within the library. The ambition of the project is to engage with the urban context in ways that rethink the normative relationship between library and context and to develop a special programmatic element or figure that operates as the hierarchical or driving force behind the design.

This special collections library includes historical collections of palimpsests and papyri.
